The Woes of an Intellectual at a Frat Party

Setting: Crowded frat party, a buddy and I are by the keg. An attractive brunette walks up to us, with a friend, and introduces herself.

Girl: Hi, I’m Beth and this is my friend Allison. We saw you guys looking lonely over here and figured you wanted some company. (the two look at each other, giggle)

Me,: Yeah, we’re just chillin’, you know the deal. This party’s kind of lame, there are too many people.

Girl (visibly excited): We were thinking the same thing! You guys want to get out of here? We were just gonna back to my room, we’ve got some drinks, and my roommate’s gone too. But I mean, only if you want to.

Me: Oh, you know, we were kind of in the middle of a pretty involved discussion on the use of phallic imagery in The Sun Also Rises. Are you into Hemingway?

Girl just walks away, perplexed and weirded out.

Me (to Allison): She’s a Faulkner fan then?
