NOTE: As I said, those mentioned are just the 'comedy tier list'. There's no need to list the others here; we all know Sandler's recent obsession with staring in serious dramas and romances, including his next piece a Walt Disney film about a man whose bedtime stories that he reads to his niece and nephew start to magically come true. Even if I had slammed my head into the keyboard just now, I could not have come up with a more random collection of words.
So now you may find yourself asking, "But Scott, where does You Don't Mess With the Zohan land on the tier list?" Well I'll tell you, you eager little scamp.
You Don't Mess With the Zohan stars Adam Sandler as 'Zohan', an Israeli counter-terrorist whose skills are so amazing that he borders on super hero like status. Despite his ability to catch bullets point blank with his nostrils, Zohan tires of working for the army in the never ending Israeli/Palestinian war and fakes his own death to pursue his lifelong dream: travel to Manhattan and become a hair stylist.
I'd be lying if I said there weren't times when I cracked up. I mean after all, it's still Adam Sandler, and the movie was co-written by genius creator of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Robert Smigel.
Aside from the moments of random laughter (including the hands down best Rocky montage parody, ever) the plot of the movie and the conflict jokes between the Arabs and the Israelis gets kind of old really quickly. When did Adam Sandler decide to start making comedies with political messages in them? First Chuck & Larry, and now Zohan if 2010 rolls around and I start seeing previews for a new Sandler flick called 'It's a Woman's Right to Choose!' I'm just going to stroll into Happy Madison Productions and start slapping people.
The Bottom Line: Die hard fan of the Sand man's movies? Go see it. Personally, this one goes in the same tier as Little Nicky for me; some random laughs, but not his best. Hey cheer up, there's always the Happy Gilmore special edition DVD.
