I had just gotten my copies of my Tech Drawing assignment finished at FedEx Kinkos, when I realized that there was a Starbucks next door. I had been up kinda early and was sorta thirsty, so I decided to head on over. I rolled the copies up and put them back in my art tube then walked next door.
As I walked inside, I saw the usual quick glances from people as the bell from the door rang. No one really seemed to care except for this one girl. She was in the middle of a conversation and just stopped and stared at me. Maybe I’m one hot looking guy or maybe I’m just too fucking weird to be out in public, but whatever the reason, she had made a pretty focused glance at me.
After putting in my order, I headed to the other side of the counter as I awaited the drop off of my coffee. The girl, who I expect was either a senior in high school or a freshman in college came over to me. I carefully tried to sum up the situation, but got nothing. It was only until she spoke that I realized just what intrigued her so much about me.
“Are you out looking for the National Treasure?”, she asked like she was the most clever person in the world. Of course we (the art and design students) know she isn’t; I get questions like this all the time in Boston, whether I’m on the T or at the Bus Station, even walking right out of Blick or Utrecht.
But without missing a beat, I respond back with, “Well, as a matter of fact, I am. I’m just grabbing a quick caffeine boost, then taking off to Boston, where supposedly there’s an encoded block at the edge of Faniuel Hall. I just got back from Fort Knox where a small engraving on the back of a wooden door showed me that the treasure is getting close. I have room for one more, wanna come along?”
I have never seen such awe out of a person. She just stood there, jaw dropped, eyes swaying from side to side, and what I think was her brain flooding out of her ears. She stood there for a moment, said nothing, and while heading back to her table of friends (who looked just as stunned) mumbled, “No, no, I’m alright, I’ll just stay here.”
As she sat down my order came out and I quickly went on my way. As I headed for the door a man asked me, “Got her good, huh?”
I responded, “No, I guess treasure hunting was just too much for her.”
