Inside the Intern-Ment Camp

Intern-Ment Camp Investigation of Intern-ment Site #232013 - Human Resources Dept. [Designed as a manila case file with paperclipped b&w images] At first they came willingly, eager for the prospect of experience in their field of interest. [Image of dapper young people cheerily walking into office building] Right away they were stripped of their names, and instead called “Dylan.” [Two interns pointing at themselves as in, “who, me?” while a higher up addresses them] They were put to work on the most menial of tasks, better suited for trained rats. The promise of academic credit blinded them to the basic denigration of their humanity. [Interns licking mounds of envelopes] Interns were left for hours in torturing states of confused shock. Often they had nothing to do but sit and look busy out of fear. Fear of what? They were never sure. [Mounds of licked envelopes stacked, interns shuffling them watching everyone else out the corner of their eyes] The standard uniform, a casual yet work-appropriate flannel, jeans, and a Macbook, kept the interns deindividualized. [Intern picking between two similar-looking flannels in the morning] Illness set in as free snacks in the boardroom provided insufficient nourishment. At least they were lucky to have free snacks, the interns reminded themselves in complete delusion. [Intern weakly bringing Cheeto to mouth] Working conditions at the cramped and tiny intern desk devolved over time. The interns, knowing themselves to be human garbage, unfeelingly inhabited the chaos. [Picture of cramped working conditions] Any day could be their last. They made their own schedule. [Other intern not there] Once released, the outside world loomed over them. Did they gain marketable experience? Did that count for academic credit? Where do they go from here? [Intern lost outside] The “lucky ones” would in time return, willingly becoming the jailers themselves in this twisted corporate prison. [Intern, now with mustache, mirroring earlier “Dylan” image, but in role of higher up]
