The Great American Cell Phone Survey Results
A few weeks ago we asked you to answer some questions about your cell phone habits, and now we're happy to release the most interesting findings in an easy-to-use infographic. Some of the results may shock and surprise you, especially if you're over 40 or a Communications major. And if you're a Communications major who also happens to be over the age of 40, well, may God have mercy on your soul.
Etiquette - How to phone it in
Phone Silence by Age Group
- 15 and under - most likely to have their phones on SILENCE.
- 15-18 - most likely to have their phones on VIBRATE
- 40 and over - most likely to have their phones on NORMAL VOLUME
Arthritis vs. Attention Deficit
- 78% of people over 40 respond to voicemails by calling back, while 48% of people under 15 text back.
Not Safe for Work
- People over the age of 40 are by far the most likely to have NSFW pictures sent from their phones get out to more than just the person they sent it to.
- 41% of cell phone users admit to having received NSFW photos.
- It turns out people with poor spelling skill are more likely to have NSFW photos of their significant other/ ex on their phone. Bad spelling, bad decisions.
A Major Difference
- Communications majors are the most likely to have their phones go off during class/ work, while Mat majors are the least likely to have that happen. Oddly enough, Communications majors are really good at communicating, while Math majors pretty much only own cell phones because they can double as calculators.
Smartphones - for dumb people
Ownership Breakdown
- 18% - Don't need one (can't afford one)
- 1% - Had one, but didn't like it. (it broke)
- 16% - Can't afford one (You're broke)
- 65% - Own a smartphone (Smart move)
- Roughly 75% of people who own a smartphone are college-age or older.
SmartPhacts
- 40% of people who text all the time during class/ work would be fine with their smart-phone even if it didn't make calls.
- People who currently use smartphones are the least likely to have ever sexted (other than people who don't have cell phones to begin with).
- Also, 15.63% of people who have never owned a cell phone are goddam liars. Or sexting with other people's phones, which is...weird.

Lost Phones vs. Broken Phones
- People who got their first cell phone when they were more than 40 years old are the most likely to have broken 5 or more cell phones (32%).
Stat Blast From The Past
- 60% of kids under 15 have never used a pay phone. Which means 40% have, which almost seems stranger.
- 79% of people who live in an apartment/house with roommates do not have a landline phone, 87% of people who live with their parents do.
- 44% only know 1-3 numbers from their phone off the top of their head.

Here are some of our favorite facts that didn't fit anywhere else.
- Of those who keep their ringer on silent, 8% experience phantom rings all the time. What's that? is that your phone ringing? Oh wait, it was nothing…OR WAS IT?
- More than half of the people under 18 polled would rather never make a call again than never text again…45% of all people poled would rather never call again.
- More than half people polled use the stock ringtone from their phone.
- 58% of people have their phones on vibrate.
- Roughly 2% of people still use a phone while driving even after being in a phone-related car accident.
