This guy here (Johnny, if his name patch is correct) is a real hero. He's the only person we see in the video who seems to care about cleaning up the post-reunion mess in the gym. Later we see him start cleaning up the rest of the school: hallways, classrooms, etc. Who agrees to do that all alone? I'll tell you who. "Johnny", probably.
Maybe Billy Joel wasn't athletic in high school, so I'll cute him some slack for not picking up that title. But certainly some of these others should have been freebies. Most Likely To Succeed? Whoever did win that probably felt like a real jackass when he saw literal Billy Joel at his class reunion and the best he had to offer in return was a PhD that took him ten or more years to earn. And don't get me started on Best Dressed.
Where did these guys come from exactly? Why is the suave and collected Billy Joel we've grown used to suddenly singing back and forth with a Casual Friday version of himself? I guess they can all carry a tune well enough, so we'll let them stay for now. By the end of the video, though, we see regular Billy Joel and his squad singing in a bathroom, but it's their counterparts that later emerge from the door. Strange.
Johnny seems pretty suspicious in his last scene, creeping up and listening to Billy Joel through the bathroom door with a wicked grin. He even smiles at the camera as if we're supposed to be okay with how devious he clearly is. Yes, Billy Joel and his friends have been singing all around you for the past few minutes, Johnny, but now they're in the bathroom (together) and they deserve some privacy. The video closes with Johnny staring blankly at the audience after taking a second or two to actually find the camera. After listening to such a popular and fun song, the last thing I want ingrained in my mind is that image of Johnny peering into my soul.
This is a love song, unsurprisingly. But never at any point do we get to meet the object of Billy Joel's affection. Was she at the reunion? If she was, then Billy Joel waited an awfully long time to call in the boys for an a capella number. Maybe he loves the school? He is the only one who stuck around this long -- even Johnny is starting to question things. Does he love the version of himself who wears short-sleeved button-down shirts? That doesn't really make a lot of sense either. I guess we'll never really know.
