Every once in a while, two competing movie studios will have a similar movie in production and then it will be a race to release it. This is sometimes because of dumb luck, sometimes because of corporate espionage, and sometimes because Hollywood just has too many stories to tell about a talking pig.
Both are strangely prescient dramas about men who have the entirety of their lives broadcast over live television, and how they grapple with the constant surveillance and the power-hungry producers that control their lives. The Truman Show was infinitely more successful, garnering several Oscar nominations and even getting a delusion named after it. However, if the shows in each movie were real, I'd be watching every goddamn second of Matthew McConaughey's life and I'd turn off Jim Carrey's by the third time he started talking about vaccines.
Also has a star that went crazy because the whole world was watching.
Also a movie that should not have won an Oscar.
Both are action movies starring a public servant with a close relationship to the President defending the White House from terrorist attack. Jamie Foxx is president in one! Famous buttchin Aaron Eckhart is president in the other but he gets held hostage and Speaker of the House Morgan FUCKING Freeman steps up to the plate, which seems like a win/win to me.
How were they reviewed?
What movie is secretly weirdly similar and was also released around the same time?
A beloved American institution is left in shambles.
