The key to a solid photoshop troll is to keep things plausible - a lot of trolls forget this, by making their photoshops too unrealistic or just flat-out unbelievable, and the result is that no one buys it as the real deal. But redditor Steec avoided this pitfall masterfully, by expertly photoshopping his infant daughter into some entirely plausible, marginally-dangerous situations.
To add some context here: his daughter had been hospitalized for quite a while prior to these pictures being uploaded to Facebook, so his friends and family were well-aware of his daughter's fragile condition. So seeing her in these mildly-dangerous situations seemed A LOT WORSE to them. Per Steec, people's reactions fell into a few groups:
...there were 2 groups. The outraged old people, and the people that knew they were all photoshopped. When I posted [the photo of his daughter over the stairs], a new, more worrying group emerged. Those that thought it was real but didn't think it was a big deal.
Thankfully, Steec was a troll with a heart of gold, and didn't quite have the wherewithal to not leave a few hints here and there that the photos were, in fact, fake:
There's some strategic mistakes in some to prove they're fake :) example: the speedometer shows 100km/h but the rev counter is at zero. And the knife purposely doesn't cast a shadow :)
Also, my wife works for the Irish equivalent of CPS. She particularly hates them as I tag her in them on Facebook for her colleagues to see.
That last bit (the fact that his wife works for Child Protective Services and he frequently tags her in the Facebook uploads) really makes you appreciate these all the more.
Note: this is the one that a lot of people didn't seem to get without some additional context, which Steec provided:
This is more of an inside joke. She had just gotten out from a long stint in hospital and was particularly delicate, it freaked out friends and family, but I forgot the entire internet population were unaware. I'll make it higher ;)
Steec, you seem like a great dad, and an even better troll. Godspeed.
