I Fought the Law

Jesus broke the law. So did George Washington. You did, too, and we want to hear about it.

When I was 17 or 18, I lost my license for 6 months for driving without insurance. (I still drove every day to work and back). My girlfriend and I worked 2nd shift at the same place. We had to drive one of my dad's old work trucks one night for some reason. A big Ford flat bed that happened to be a stick shift. We got about 2 miles from work headed home and I looked back and see blue lights in the rear view mirror. Without thinking I reached over, put my finger thru her back belt loop on her jeans and with one fluid motion pulled her over the top of me, into the drivers seat while I slid to the right. (Note the cops had to see this thru the back window as they were about 3 feet from our back bumper) As soon as she realizes she's driving she panics, slams on breaks - no clutch - and the truck comes grinding to a halt. The cops are fish-tailing all over the road behind us to avoid hitting us. The cop walks up and asks her for her license and registration. After a minute or two he asks me if I know why he pulled us over. We walk to the back of the truck, and he points to my tail lights that weren't working. Then he points to the skid marks and says "What's all this about?" I said - with a straight face - "She doesn't know how to drive a stick and since it was late and there was no traffic, I thought I'd let her drive and get used to changing gears and stuff. When you put your blue lights on I guess she panicked, hit the brakes without using the clutch and choked it down." The cop asked if my emergency flashers worked and we checked. They did. He asked me if I could drive. I said yes.. (I could drive, just not legally) He let us off with a warning and I drove on home with the flashers on the whole way, with no further incident. I still think he HAD to see us switch... :)
