This summer I worked in a kitchen at a retirement home in the same building as my mom. My daily tasks included being to work at 6:30am, scraping half-eaten food off plates, cleaning ovens, washing things in water that was often hotter than 180 degrees- and washing these enormous bowls my coworkers liked to call "Big Bertha." They felt to be about 45 lbs each, two of them didn't even fit into the sinks, and an average day had me washing two or three or four of them by hand. For someone who was already a bit of a weakling, eight hours of this job was hell. So when my mother came down to visit my college dorm last week, she brought me a nice little card that had been signed by some of my friends at the home, all of them with these great long notes of encouragement. My boss simply wrote: "We miss you, and Big Bertha misses you." Thanks, Dave. I didn't hate the people in that job, but Bertha can miss me for the rest of her life.
