Last semester in college, I took a US history class that went from reconstruction, post-Civil War to the present. When covering reconstruction, my professor gave a quick recap of the Civil War, not wanting to take up too much class time. When she mentioned the South seceding, a girl raised her hand and asked what secession is, and causing my professor to explain to her the definition of secession for 10 minutes.
