I happen to be chronically ill, since i was about 17. Last time i visited my specialist, and i complained about being SO tired all the time and that it depressed me, he told me, i should view my disease and myself differently. He said: "Having Crohns disease, is like being an athlete, it's top sport for the body to deal with it, it's natural for you to be so tired,...it's the... Read More »
Dairy Farmin'
Most of the students at the college I attend work for the school's work program which has a vast spectrum of jobs. Starting out freshman year, everyone in the program receives $7.25/hr regardless of what it job you have and you slowly work your way up. (Though a student max wage is $7.95/hr). I got to work the school dairy farm. The dairy worker tasks included waking up at 4:30 AM to milk or feed the cows, treating sick animals/taking care of general herd health, or cleaning up any and all poop/pee because there about 30 of the cows are in a barn or in the milking parlor so any waste they make must be cleaned up ASAP. We also have to walk around the pastures in the middle of the morning or at the late night shift to check on the cows while listening to coyotes in the pastures or risking a run-in with a rabid animal (There are plenty of cases of rabies in the area). I personally got to do all of these things as well as have the duty of making sure as many animals as possible were pregnant, which meant that at times I had to stick my arm up the cows butt and prod a rod up her vagina to artificially inseminate her. Most of the workers, thanks to our job (and this includes workers from the beef unit, sheep unit, and equine barns as well) have to go to class many times reeking of the barn and our work attire is considered a bio-hazard in some places. If we get injured by an animal, we don't get compensated (People who have gotten broken limbs have tried it). If an animal gets sick or dies on our watch it is our responsibility to take care of it. We have to work holiday days, meaning there is NOT ONE SINGLE DAY OF THE YEAR where there are not at least 6 students on shift, meaning many of us have had to sacrifice Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, or any other holiday to work with the cows. The dairy workers do all of these and so much more, and yet get paid the same amount as someone who mostly sits in the library to do their homework. WTF
I used to be able to get back from lunch at 12:30 and know that there would be a fresh batch of uPick submissions to read, but now I have to actually do some work as it is not being updated everyday!!!!
Several years ago I worked with a overnight delivery company. It wasn't unusual to run into all sorts of dogs when you made a delivery (including nasty ones.) One day, I walked up to a lady's house where the front door was open. As soon as I rang the bell, I heard the jingle of dog tags & realized I was too far away from the vehicle to get back there in time, so I braced myself.... Read More »
I work at Wal-Mart as a Wireless Sales Associate (basically electronics), and we have this one reoccurring older African-American customer who comes in with the assumption that we are some type of IT or Geek Squad. Well anyways, he comes in about a week ago, and brings his laptop. The laptop that he has is a Compact with Windows XP (a bit outdated I must say). Anyways, he pulls... Read More »
I work private security, we have lately been having a lot of issues with access control and breaches (people not allowed to be there, being there.) so we have one officer who is in charge of training all of the officers in proper breach control. During his breach test, he failed and got a slap on the wrist. During mine, I passed but I missed a minor detail and got written up and... Read More »
