It takes a lot to annoy me, but I am starting to get pissed about the number of people that complain about there being no elbow rule at the WSOBP.
Not one person who I have ever seen complain has understood the problem or been able to offer a legitimate solution. For the thousandth time, it's not the length of the table, it's that you can't accurately determine whether your opponent is leaning when you are facing him. With big money on the line, this is a PROBLEM. There is no purpose to a rule if it cannot be enforced. You would need someone to watch each and every shot of each and every game from a 90 degree angle. With the scale of the WSOBP this is not an option.
Mats/tape on the floor/guards are a nice idea, but all they do is effectively lengthen the table, which only makes it appear as though people aren't leaning. Come to think of it, maybe this would be enough to shut up these legions of morons, since clearly none of them cares what is actually going on anyway.
On top of all this is the fact that while, as with many sports, height conveys an inherent advantage, it doesn't make half the difference people tend to think it does. If we had some way of verifying height statistics on each player I would sit down and do a complete breakdown of player height vs win percentage for all WSOBP's just to prove that it's less about how tall you are and more about your skill as a thrower (among other factors).
I am not up on professional darts but from what I have read there is no leaning restriction, and I can almost guarantee it is for the same reasons. There is more to say on the subject but really it all falls under the heading of not being an idiot.
Again if anyone thinks they have a silver bullet that will allow us to enforce an elbow rule, I am all ears, until then, kindly stfu.
