my thoughts: The pillars are built into cups 2 3 and 4. But the fifth pillar is actually hollow and filled with real water. That's why after you pour some liquid into the fifth and largest glass it fills up with real liquid.
The fifth cup has to be filled like a real cup if it needs to support filling up the rest of the glasses (with pillars).
Now. What does "Pillar" mean? -
