  There's this old arthur c clarke book called "childhoods end." Long story short, the human race becomes this utopia, but everyone is so content all the time that progress in the arts screeches to a halt. Realizing this, a group of people band together and break apart from society to lead a harder, but ultimately more meaningful and "human" existence.The leader of the group is asked why they have done this, and he says (im paraphrasing) "we have one thing in common. we each wish to do one thing, no matter how small, better than anyone else who has ever lived."When I saw health ledger playing the joker, it was one of the only times in my life that i felt like I was witnessing someone doing that. Amazing.
