Ben definitely knows. Juliette knew what it was, its only that neither one of them want to reveal it. What is interesting to me about the monster is that it is not a tool of Dharma or the natives. Dharma built a giant sound fence to guard against it. It attacks Juliette, and she has the codes to the fence as well--so, they fear it. So who controls the smoke monster? I had thought it was manufactured, but increasingly I think it is the native. I read on a website once an argument that it was a djin--like a genie but not so disney. It made a lot of sense

Who does everyone think was in the casket at the funeral that only Jack attended? Maybe Juliette? Or one of the Copter crew?

I'm with you on the black box theory, at least to the extent that I understand it so far. Yet, not everybody gets what they want. Ben was initially brought into the Others camp because he could see his mom. Locke is respected now because he seems to have that communion, and the Other's took Walt for the same reason. I tend to think that they took the children because children would more readily accept whatever is happening on the island. The big question for me I guess is what exactly is the nature of the island's special properties? I am a huge fan of the show, but my dedication is contingent on the maintenance of an internal consistency. If eventually we are expected to just buy that the island is "magic," I will be pissed.

Ben doesn't reveal anythign until it is to his advantage. He held that information so Locke wouldn't shoot him. Hurley definitely isn't saying anything that makes him sound crazy--he has been through that before. And generally, nobody wants to admit to any esoteric experiences. Except for Locke.
