All Your Base Are Belong to Us

“All Your Base Are Belong to Us” is the translation of dialogue from the opening scene to the 1989 Japanese videogame Zero Wing by Toaplan. The phrase, which roughly means “We have taken over all your bases,” was translated poorly due to a rushed European release of the game in 1991. The opening scene from the game appeared on Zany Video Game Quotes in 1998 and gained popularity in 2000 on the Something Awful message boards. Around this time, the band The Laziest Men on Mars remixed the game music into their song “Invasion of the Gabber Robots.” The song served as the background music for the Flash animation video released by TribalWar’s Bad_CRC in February 2001. The video spread quickly and inspired widespread pranks, such as the hacking of the Dutch railways website so it read “All your trains are belong to us.”
