Whenever someone (a date, a coworker, a normal human) brings up one of these shows that you haven't seen, here's what to say to avoid the dreaded, "You haven't seen it! Oh my god! How have you missed that??" and make it sound like you're actually a part of society.
1. The Walking Dead
People who watch the show will totally get it. The kid is the WORST.
2. Mad Men
Ok, but actually the costuming is really good. Like you should at least watch one episode.
3. Game of Thrones
4. True Detective (Season One)
You should really actually watch this one. Maybe skip season two, but season one is just...Like the title sequence alone is a work of art.
5. Orange Is The New Black
I know you don't get this because you haven't seen the show, but honestly the character arc for Pennsatucky is amazing. I get that you don't know who that is but it's really incredible.
6. Downton Abbey
Maggie Smith is seriously so great. She's more than just Professor McGonagall.
7. Breaking Bad
This one is tough because if you don't say it the way that the character says it, it will just sound rude. Maybe just watch a few episodes to hear how Jesse says it? Honestly though, once you start watching you won't be able to stop.
8. Twin Peaks
You should watch the original at least. Maybe skip the reboot (if it happens, fingers crossed) but you have to watch the original. The log lady! Ughhh, you don't get that because you haven't seen it, but you should see it.
I won't actually include what the smoke monster thing is because I don't want to spoil it. It won't even make sense if I explain it and you haven't watched it.
Yes, you could also talk about the lack of diversity, but Girls still has a lot to offer. You would actually really like it. You're such a Hannah. Like the good parts of Hannah and the adorable parts of Shoshanna.
11. Ray Donovan
It's like Scandal but for Hollywood. You haven't seen Scandal? OH MY GOD.
She has these amazing wine glasses too. You can get them at Crate&Barrel. At least watch a few clips so you can see what I'm talking about.
13. The Wire
Ok Season 2 doesn't suck but relatively speaking it's just not the best. But only if you compare it to Season 4. Compared to the rest of TV in general it's still amazing.
14. Battlestar Galactica
This is no longer on Netflix, but maybe get the DVDs somewhere because it really is a great show. It's like a political show but in space. You'll like it.
15. House of Cards
From here you can segue into talking about politics, but if you don't know anything about that I cannot help you. Unless you actually just watch House of Cards so you can just talk about it with people. Jesus, stop being so countercultural and watch it already.
